02-28-04: 11-day Occupation Ends
Fishermen from the cooperatives of Santa Cruz
and Isabela islands ended an 11-day takeover of the offices of the Galapagos National
Park (GNP) and Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS) on February 28, 2004 by
reaching an agreement with the Minister of the Environment and the government
of Ecuador. The fishermens protest, which prevented personnel from both
institutions from carrying out their duties and prevented tourists from entering
the Park and Station facilities, sought changes in the rules governing fishing,
tourism, and other activities in the Galapagos National Park and Marine Reserve.
Unfortunately, the new agreement reached by the government included a long list
of demands from fishermen that, if carried out, will threaten the islands
unique marine environment and those who depend on it. Furthermore, the agreement
sets yet another dangerous precedent of fishermen getting their way via the threat
of violence, and ignores the mechanism for conflict resolution established in
the Special Law for the Galapagos passed of 1998.
As a supporter of NEGF and the conservation of the Galapagos, I encourage you
to take action by sending a note to the President of the Republic of Ecuador,
Lucio Gutierrez and the Minister of Environment, Cesar Narvaez. The World Wildlife
Funds Conservation Action Network has set up a link to a form letter using
the following link:
http://takeaction.worldwildlife.org/action/index.asp?step=2&item=15542
Feel free to modify the letter as you see fit. International pressure from the
United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization has already
begun via the threat of placing the Islands status as a World Heritage Site
in danger. Voice your opinion to help protect some of the worlds most ecologically
unique and unspoiled areas on the planet.
