03-10-04 Summer Camp 2004
From 9 Febuary to 5 March the New Era Galapagos Foundation ran a summer camp for 100 local children. The camp offered classes in English language, environmental education, art and sports, as well as trips to various sites around San Cristobal island, including La Loberia, Punta Karola and La Galapaguera.
Volunteers Sally and Yolana taught the children English using singing, drawing and games. A particular favourite was the game where the children could run around the room to stand by the new English word they had learnt.
The environmental education was taught by volunteer Eric, whose bingo game has proved so popular that it is still being playing the Highlands and by the Scouts. Special activities were led by Liz, a Peace Corps volunteer working at The Charles Darwin Station.
The arts sessions were led by volunteer Barbara, whose background in teaching came in especially useful when dealing with the volatile mix of children, paint and glue. Etienne and Emma, our volunteers from Canada, helped with the arts classes.
Special arts activities were given by volunteers Bill and Sue who had brought beads for the children to make bracelets. We`ll be finding those beads until Christmas!
The sports classes were led by volunteer Slava who taught the children to play football, basketball, swimming, tag, hopskotch and many other outside games.
The summer camp ran much smoother thanks to the work of the group leaders who supervised the groups of children and helped in the class instruction. The youngest group, the Penguins, were led by Sue and Bill; the 6 to 8 year olds were led by Suzanne and Eelke, called the Iguanas; the Sealions were led by Arthur; and finally the oldest group were led by by Sabrina and Megan, who became known as Sabrina`s Sharks.
Arthur also began an exchange with a school in Oleron, France in Europe. The children really enjoyed learning about another country and exchanging letters, artwork and emails.
The summer camp ended with a open evening for the parents at Rincon Ecologico where they could see what the children had been doing for the last month. On the final day the summer camp had a party on Playa Mann, with games, prizes and dancing.
