Impact of the New Era Galapagos Foundation
NEGF
is the first organization in San Cristobal to be founded under the principal of
integrating the community directly into our work. We are the only organization
in San Cristobal with this mission which is still sustainable and viable today.
A high level of community participation, 20% of the population of San Cristobal.
In 1996, 50 students were educated by NEGF. By the year 2000, demand had grown
for our services, where we were serving over 400 children, youth, and adults.
In 2003, we can count over 1000 participants in our various programs. In 2009, English language classes reached capacity, and over 100 students attended classes every week.
In 2003, NEGF provided 675 hours of adult evening education and 930 hours of environmental
and English education to youth and children. These numbers have steadily grown over the last several years.
In 2003, over 50 children gained a higher level of English (Beginner to Intermediate,
or Intermediate to Advanced) and environmental awareness during the school term
and continue their education with NEGF.
We have implemented an educational program for High school students in the eleventh
grade to complete 200 hours of community service with the NEGF as part of their
graduation requirement.
We continue an online educational exchange between students in the Galapagos and
the United States via Creative Connections (www.ccph.com).
Teenage students from our English programs assist local Institutions with an interpretation
service from English to Spanish.
We have offered 3 college scholarships for exceptional students. One student who
had been given a college scholarship in 2000 studied an engineering degree at
a University on the mainland and will return to work on San Cristobal (although
not in the fishing industry).
Playa
Mann, the main beach in San Cristobal, has been put under our jurisdiction. Playa
Mann used to be filled with litter and unpopular but today the beach has become
the place to be seen on the weekends by locals and tourists alike.
We formed botanical gardens in our local High Schools and Playa Mann.
Several large murals, including the ones near the airport and around La Concha,
depicting a variety of the unique and spectacular wildlife living in the Galapagos
Islands.
Each year, we conduct
· 12 discussions with local teenagers about introduced species, recycling,
waste management, geology of the Archipelago, and social problems.
· 8 coastal and beach cleanups.
· 10 field trips to designated tourist sites in San Cristobal.
Twice weekly radio programs offering English and environmental education, whilst
also discussing locals community issues, which is listened to by approximately
700 residents.
